Emerging Opportunities for Binary Tools

Over the past decade, a large number of binary tools have been developed for performance measurement, testing, simulation, and optimization. However, exciting new opportunities are emerging in the new distributed computing model of the Internet with strong requirements for reliability and performance. We have developed Vulcan, a binary modification infrastructure with capabilities to address some of the needs of this dynamic and heterogeneous environment. This talk discusses the new opportunities, describes the Vulcan framework, and illustrates our ideas through tools that we have developed to address our needs.
